After many operational years in wind farm Waardtocht in the Netherlands, a Vestas V66 is overhauled and re-installed under supervision of Topwind. The turbine is installed next to the factory of a carpet manufacturer in South Wales.

For the new owner (Sirius Renewable Energy) Topwind was as a Project Manager responsible for the following activities:

  • Refurbishment and modifications conform land and location specific requirements. For example, modifications were necessary to comply with the G59 regulations.
  • Grid connection

  • Transport of the main components
  • Installation and commissioning

Wind farm Zuiderzeehaven

After successfully completing the turbine selection and contract negotiations with the manufacturer, Topwind supervises the construction of four Enercon E-82 turbines of Windkr-acht in Kampen.

For optimal performance Topwind and Windkr-acht signed a multiannual agreement for the Asset Management. All daily tasks for the safe and optimal operation of the turbine are in hand of the Topwind Control Room. The turbine will be under control 24/7 of an independent professional company with an extensive network and many years’ experience in the wind industry.

Topwind has offered their services in the following phases of the project:

  • Development: Tendering & Selection, Contract Management

  • Realisation: Construction supervision

  • Exploitation: Asset Management

Wind farm Growind

  • Project Management

In November 2016 Topwind was responsible for the supervision and HSE coordination during the dismantling of two Vestas V90 turbines. One turbine was positioned between a railway line and public road including a cycle-track which should remain accessible. 

During the preparations of the dismantling Topwind has drawn up a HSE plan in which all the safety requirements are ensured. Examples of this requirements are:

  • Daily toolbox meetings;
  • Visitor registration;
  • Ensure people do not work under suspended load;
  • Correct storage of hazardous substances;
  • Supervision of public safety.

After dismantling the turbines were shipped to Finland where these will be rebuilt. 

Wind farm Wagendorp

After a successful take-over, Topwind will be responsible for the Asset Management of a Vestas V-112 3,45 MW wind turbine of JICA Wind B.V. in Wagendorp for the coming next years.

The contract negotiations and the turbine selection were done by Topwind to gain the optimal result from both technical and financial perspective.

Prior to the take-over, Topwind performed a comprehensive inspection. After a number of remaining items were rectified in collaboration with the turbine manufacturer, the take-over was a fact.

For optimal performance Topwind and JICA signed a multiannual agreement for the Asset Management of the 119 metres high wind turbine. All daily tasks for the safe and optimal operation of the turbine are in hand of the Topwind Control Room. Wind farm Hartel III

For a Polish customer Topwind has managed the complete HSE during the dismanteling of the turbines nearby the Hartelkanaal, Rotterdam.

Before start of the work, Topwind  has drawn up the overall HSE plan according the site and national regulations. During the disassembly Topwind has organized a kick-off meeting, and managed the daily toolbox meeting, visitor registration and the supervision on-site to guarantee a higher level of safety.

 

Cristaleriás

Topwind have managed the whole project of glass manufacturer Cristaleriás ToRo sPa. The turbines bought by Cristaleriás and sold by wind turbine trader Windbrokers are disassembled, overhauled, transported and rebuilt in Chile by Topwind.

The glass manufacturer had bought two Dutch Vestas V66 turbines. In collaboration with service team Bettink the turbines have been overhauled and after an visual inspection by Topwind the client is invited to visit The Netherlands. The satisfaction and trust of the client by visiting Topwind was so great that Cristaleriás placed a another order of three more V66 turbines.

Under supervision of Topwind the five Vestas V66 turbines are shipped by S5 Agency World to Chile, where the turbines are rebuilt and installed to generate renewable energy in South America.

Wind farm Growind

Since 2008 Topwind is responsible for the Asset Management of wind farm Growind (www.growind.nl). The wind farm has reached the highest availability of all Vestas turbines in Europe. In addition the Ice Prevention System (IPS) has been developed at Growind.

Topwind is always looking for solutions and possibilities to maximize efficiency and minimize the risks. After ice was thrown off the blades with regular ice detection systems, the authorities required to turn off all the turbines. Topwind proactive developed the IPS to prevent that ice can build up on the blades and to reduce the down time. Due to the proven technology the IPS is very successful and is installed on various wind farms in The Netherlands and abroad.

Wieringermeer

Topwind has managed the Balance of Plant for the repowering of the turbines of six farmers in the province North-Holland. The farmers, already owners of a single wind turbine (Lagerwey, Vestas and NEGmicon), have repowered their turbines at the same time for a new EWT-DW52-900KW turbine.

The new EWT wind turbines are built within three months after purchasing. To manage all the works that needs to be done and to ensure that the repowering of the turbines would be a success they involved Topwind in their project. Topwind managed the disassembling of the existing turbines, subsidy, power supply and connections, managing the planning and quality off all suppliers.

Due to the knowledge and experience of the Topwind employees we knew the critical points in the project and we could make the project to a success.

Wind farm Zuiderzeehaven

Based on the needs and preferences of Windkr-acht Topwind has reviewed the concept purchase and service agreements of two manufactures and reported the results to Windkr-acht. After Windkr-acht had chosen for Enercon Topwind was responsible for the contract negotiations with the manufacturer on behalf of Windkr-acht.

After successfully finishing the turbine selection and contract management between Windkr-acht and the manufacturer Enercon. Topwind supervised the construction of the four Enercon E-82 turbines at the Haatland- and Zuiderzeehaven (harbors) in Kampen, The Netherlands. During the construction of the turbines Topwind was responsible for the planning and the coordination of all suppliers, on-site supervision, HSE, insurances and quality and take-over inspections.

Due to the positive collaboration between Windkr-acht and Topwind, Topwind will be responsible for the Asset Management of the wind farm the next years too.

Wind farm Growind

Topwind has coordinated the disassembly and HSE during disassembly of a Vestas V90 in the Eemshaven (harbor in the northern of The Netherlands).

The wind turbine is part of the wind farm Growind consisting of 21x Vestas V90 3MW turbines. The turbine is sold and disassembled to make way for a prototype 2-B Energy turbine. A 2B6, 6MW turbine with a two blades downwind rotor intended for off-shore.

The 2-B Energy turbine will be tested and must prove itself onshore before being build offshore. The turbine with two blades has the advantage that helicopters can land on the helicopter platform easily if the blades are stopped in the horizontal position. In that way it is easier to perform maintenance to the turbine if it is operational off-shore. Malfunctions can be fixed much faster and the availability of the turbine can be maximized, so the costs per kWh will be lower.

The disassembled V90 turbine in operation since 2008 will be exported to Poland. Ville Power sp. will rebuild the turbine and give it its second life.

Toyota Vehicle Logistics

Vestas has sold four V90 turbines in the port of Zeebrugge including the Topwind Ice Prevention System because of the critical location of the wind farm of Eneco Belgium.

The Toyota Vehicle Logistics Center is located In the port of Zeebrugge. Toyota is handling around 250.000 to 300.000 vehicles every year. The Toyota- and Lexus vehicles are stored in the harbor before they will be transported over Europe reached into Russia. In the harbor the vehicles are provided with extra accessories and checked and tested for delivery in Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany.

Because the vehicles are stored in the harbor falling ice is cause directly damage to the vehicles and danger to harbor employees. To be sure that the vehicles will not be damaged by ice and the employees can work safely underneath the turbines Vestas had ordered the IPS at Topwind and sold it together with the turbines.

Wind farm Sabinadijk

By government order the turbines of wind farm Sabinadijk were turned off because of bat activity near the turbines. Due to the innovation capacity and to offering customized solutions, Topwind has developed the Bat Protection System in collaboration with bat experts and Bureau Waardenburg .

The system to monitor the bat activity within the wind farm is installed in one of the turbines of Sabinadijk. The BPS is collecting valuable data of the local bat activity and if required and allowed can stop the turbines if bats are detected.

”As ecologists we see great potential in a system that prevents bat/wind turbine collisions. The BPS switches off when bats are near wind turbines. This is more effective than the current measures taken where turbines are switched off based on predictions and forecasts. It has been a pleasure for my colleagues and myself to contribute our knowledge to this system. This is a valuable step forward for both the protection of bats and the generation of renewable energy.”

Wind farm Growind

The Topwind Ice Prevention System (IPS) is developed at Wind farm Growind consisting of 21x Vestas V90 turbines.

Topwind is responsible for the Asset Management of Wind farm Growind. After ice was thrown off the blades with regular ice detection systems in 2010, the authorities required to turn off all the turbines. Topwind proactive developed the IPS to prevent that ice can build up on the blades and to reduce the down time. This resulted in the successfully Ice Prevention System.

Since the system is installed in 2010 no ice is thrown off the blades and the turbines don’t need to be stopped. Due to the proven technology the IPS is very successful and is installed on various wind farms in The Netherlands and abroad.

Wind farm Perwez

After the Bat Protection System (BPS) was developed and installed on wind farm Sabinadijk of Eneco, the BPS is installed at wind farm Perwez of Aspriavi in Belgium too. During higher bat activity periods the wind farm is obliged to preventive stop the turbines.

Furthermore Aspiravi is obligated to do research to the bat activity and bat casualties. With the BPS the local bat activity is monitored and all the data is logged. Spectrograms and the weather conditions during bat activity such as wind speed, wind direction, temperature, humidity, brightness etc.

The BPS is collecting valuable data to overhand to the authorities to reduce the down time and to protect the bats.

Wind farm Lijsbeth Tijs

Wind fam Lijsbeth Tijs operates 6 turbines in a line along the Lijsbeth Tijsweg between De Goorn and the highway A7. In 2017 6 Vestas V52 turbines are replaced by turbines from the Spanish manufacturer Gamesa (type G52, 850 kW). Turbines from this manufacturer were never installed in the Netherlands before. Topwind was responsible for the Balance of Plan (BoP) package.

Topwind has executed the following:

  • Supporting the negotiations of the purchase and maintenance contracts of the turbines;
  • Supervision of safety, quality, planning and budget during dismantling and construction;
  • Coordination of the purchase and installation of the energy meters;
  • Design, engineering, purchasing en coordination of the energy metering systems to assure compliance with the feed in tariff regulations;
  • Take Over inspection.

Wind farm Growind

  • Lagerwey L136 2x

Growind B.V. owns and operates 20 wind turbines in Eemshaven which are owned by 112 participants. In 2015 two turbines at this wind farm were dismantled and replaced by two Lagerwey L136 4.5 MW turbines in 2016. The fact that these turbines were the first of this type delivered by Lagerwey, makes this project a special one. Besides, Lagerwey has tested their new technology for construction with the ‘Climbing Crane’. At this moment the Lagerwey L136 (with 132 metre hub height) is the highest turbine that has ever been built in the Netherlands. Topwind has been responsible for the operations of the 20 turbines and has supported Growind with the realisation of this project.

The scope of Topwind comprises of the following:

  • Support and (HSE-)coordination of the dismantling of two existing turbines.
  • Contract negotiations for the purchase and the maintenance of the turbines during the next 15 years. The contract was based on the international well-known FIDIC contract model.
  • As ‘Owner Engineer’ Topwind was responsible for the coordination and quality control during the entire project. After a Take Over inspection one turbine has been transferred to Growind, the second turbine is expected to be installed end of September.

Wind farm Tera Kora II

Wind farm Tera Kora I is operational since 2012 and consists of 5 Vestas V90 3.0MW turbines. In 2017 Topwind was involved in the extension of this wind farm. The extension (5 Vestas V117 3.3MW turbines) is initiated by NuCuraçao Windpark II, a consortium of NuCapital and Aspiravi. After the extension wind farm Tera Kora I & II have a total power of 31.5 MW.

Topwind has been assigned by NuCuraçao Windpark II B.V. to provide the Owner Engineer services. The scope for Topwind includes:

  • Inspection at the Vestas factory in Denmark before loading of the main components. Topwind has inspected the turbine storage conditions, offshore conservation and possible damages to components.
  • After shipping of the turbines Topwind was responsible for the quality and Take Over of the turbines and wind farm facilities like SCADA.
  • Monitoring and approval of the ‘trial operation’.
  • The Owner Engineering is finished with a Take Over inspection to ensure quality and delivery according to the contractual arrangements.
